Who’s Your Daddy?

Humane Society of Broward County will have DNA testing done on several adult dogs to see what their real heritage is

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – No need to call Maury Povich…in honor of Father’s Day on June 19, the Humane Society of Broward County will have DNA testing done on several adult dogs to see what their real heritage is.   While a dog may look like a Labrador his DNA test might show he is part hound, part beagle and part boxer.   Clinic staff will utilize Wisdom Panel ® which requires a cheek swab and the sample is sent to their lab for analysis.   Wisdom Panel® breaks down a dog’s lineage in the form of an ancestry tree. This allows you to see which breeds are present at the parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent levels. Keep in mind that a parent contributes 50% of their DNA to the puppy, while a grandparent contributes about 25% and great-grandparent approximately 12.5%.

The adoption fee for these select dogs, all dogs over 40 pounds, and cats 6 months and older will be ½ price for Father’s Day weekend (Saturday June 18 and Sunday June 19).  So stop on by…and add a furry friend to your family.

All pets are spayed or neutered and micro-chipped before going home.  In addition, they receive preliminary vaccinations, a 10-day limited health care plan courtesy of VCA Animal Hospitals, 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance (restrictions apply) dogs over seven months are tested for heartworm, and cats are feline leukemia tested.  Adopters also receive a bag of Purina ONE pet food, and more goodies.   The regular adoption fee for dogs over 6 months is $100 and cats over 6 months are $30.

Open seven days, the HSBC is conveniently located at 2070 Griffin Road, just a block west of I-95.  Adoption hours are Monday – Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  For more information visit www.humanebroward.com or call 954-989-3977, ext. 6.

The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from people and companies who want to help us help the animals.  The shelter receives no government funding and is not affiliated with any local or national organization with a similar name.
