Over 100 children and families enjoyed Family Fun Day at Children’s Harbor sponsored by Weston Velo, a local cycling club. When the Weston Velo started looking for sponsors to update their kits (cycling clothing), they decided to use it as an opportunity to give back to the community. Weston Velo members Kirstie Bolitho and Alfredo Aguirre reached out to Children’s Harbor with the hopes of giving children in foster care new bikes, the idea for the Family Fun Day was born.

Children’s Harbor, a nonprofit agency that provides nurturing, family group homes for 24 siblings and 7 pregnant/parenting teens, coordinated a special day on their 8 acre campus in Pembroke Pines. Children enjoyed basketball games, face painting, and a bounce house, but most of all they enjoyed being presented with their very own bike.

With the support of Alex’s Pro Bicycle Shop, the Weston Velo members and their sponsors raised enough money to purchase 60 bikes worth approximately $8,000.  Members of Weston Velo fitted shirts, adjusted helmets, barbecued and still others taught some of the children to ride. “We obviously love to ride and hopefully our enthusiasm can rub off on the kids, since bike riding is not just transportation, but provides fitness, stress relief, and an opportunity to spend time outdoors with family and friends in an active lifestyle” said Ken Solovay, one of the founding members of the Weston Velo.

The Pembroke Pines Police Department Community Affairs officers were on hand to teach road safety and assist with providing and fitting helmets.  The Police Explorers were also present and assisted with traffic control and road safety training for bikers.

“The Weston Velo not only gave our kids new bikes, they also gave them happy childhood memories of being surrounded by people who care. Watching a Weston Vela member teach a 15 year old with cerebral palsy learn to ride a bike for the first time brought tears to my eyes. It was a magical day!” shared Elizabeth Wynter, Children’s Harbor President & CEO.
