FORT LAUDERDALE, Fl – The beauty of wine and opera will become one on Thursday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 5 during “A Taste of Rossini” Spanish wine tastings with nationally acclaimed wine expert Lyn Farmer, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ stylish Intermezzo Lounge. The tastings will be presented immediately before Florida Grand Opera’s 7:30 p.m. performances of one of the greatest comic operas ever produced: Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville.”

This verylimited offer is nearly 30 percent off the normal retail cost, and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Packages start as low as $32 per person, with many price options available (ticket fees apply). As a tribute to the evening, the Intermezzo Lounge will also offer some Spanish tapas, as well as other wines, beer and sodas, coffees and desserts. Top-shelf drinks are served for $5. The Intermezzo Lounge is open to guests who have purchased the package, beginning one hour prior to the performance and during intermission.

“The ‘A Taste of Rossini’ package is the perfect way for both opera connoisseurs and novices to enjoy a great night out, experience an amazing production, try some new wines and delicious tapas – all at a greatly reduced rate: nearly 30 percent off regular pricing,” said Carmen Ackerman, Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District project manager. “The tastings also present an unsurpassed, value-driven opportunity to experience the knowledge of nationally acclaimed wine expert Lyn Farmer, as well as socialize in the chic Intermezzo Lounge.”

“The Barber of Seville,” which southflorida.com raves is a “delightfully profligate production of Rossini's wildly popular, 200-year-old comic opera,” traces the adventures of handsome young Count Almaviva as he spots the lovely Rosina and courts her in spite of her jealous guardian's attempts to thwart him. Of course, he would never have succeeded without help from that crafty Figaro, who is much, much more than just a barber.

Beat the traffic and get the most out of each performance by attending Florida Grand Opera’s Pre-Opera Lectures with the witty and captivating Justin Moss, as he tells the inside story of each opera. These opera previews begin one hour before the performance in the theater. In addition, opt to stay after this performance for an informative Q&A session hosted by Florida Grand Opera's General Director and CEO Susan T. Danis and members of the senior artistic and production staff. Ask questions about the opera and get some insight behind the scenes about how the production came together. This free event will be an open forum to ask questions and be a part of the discussion.

The unique wine tasting experience with Lyn Farmer, acclaimed wine educator and Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Arts Ambassador, will explore the comparisons of harmony and texture between wine and music. Farmer will illustrate how to taste the difference between lighter and heavier texture in wines. He will then demonstrate how to hear texture, finding the same distinctions in Rossini’s music in “The Barber of Seville.” He will present a guided tasting of two Spanish wines (one sparkling wine and one red wine), as well as a PowerPoint with illustrative slides and audio examples.

“Just as Rossini’s music is cast in a light, comic vein that occasionally masks a deeper profundity, so we can find the same elements in wine,” said Farmer. “Like music, wine conveys much of its character through aroma and flavor (think the wine equivalent of melody and harmony). And there are deeper levels to wine, just as there are in music; in both media, we use the same word: texture.”

Farmer is a James Beard Award-winning journalist and program creator for luxury products and lifestyle brands; a skilled "synthesist" who connects diverse areas with innovative concepts. Certified by the Society for Wine Educators, the CIVC (Champagne), IVDP (Portugal) and Sake Education Council (Tokyo), he has created innovative entertainment and enrichment programs for luxury cruise lines, developed imaginative ways to reach new wine and spirits consumers, and brings a unique style and enthusiasm to public speaking on luxury and cultural affairs.
