Starbucks use of special holiday cups during the upcoming holidays is an 18 year tradition. Each year, a new design features traditional winter and Christmas holiday symbols such as snowmen, ornaments, and reindeer.

This year there are no symbols on the plain red cups. Problem? Oh yeah!

Starbucks says they “usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories,” others said that the coffee chain’s plain red cup was a sign of Christian cleansing and a ‘war on Christmas.’

It’s possible they’ve been ‘holdin’ in the hate’ until something as benign as this popped up.

A viral campaign by a former pastor in Arizona and criticism from some conservative groups say they removed all mentions of Christmas from their red holiday cups because “They hate Jesus.”

Arizona “social media personality” Joshua Feuerstein posted a video on Facebook asking people to give their name as “Merry Christmas,” forcing baristas to write it on the cups. It sparked a huge number of misspellings of each word. They would call out ‘Murray’ and no one would claim their coffee.

Feuerstein entered a local Starbucks while wearing a Jesus-related shirt and legally carrying a gun. “I would probably have used the gun only in the true spirit of Christmas” he said, “and only against those who didn’t agree with me.

Oh, and by the way, I’m sure the star on their cup is not the Star of Bethlehem.”
