Known to many as the Medical Detective, Dr. Ronald Grisanti, founder and President of Functional Medicine University, is navigating his way into the minds of doctors throughout the United States and abroad. In fact, his students come from 68 countries with the majority coming from the Unites States.

Functional Medicine approaches health problems differently. Instead of masking the problem, it aims at restoring the body's natural functioning.  “It’s just a different thinking process,” says Grisanti. “It deals with looking at the root cause. It’s a step beyond alternative medicine.”  In the dominant health care model today, medication is used to get rid of a patients symptoms. If the patient stops taking the medication, symptoms generally return.  Dr. Grisanti believes that there is an erosion of trust in medicine.  Based on data from an international health care survey, the United States is near the bottom of the list when it comes to public trust in the medical establishment, Harvard Researcher’s Report. Despite spending more on health care than the next 10 top-spending countries combined, the U.S. has the most chronic disease and shortest life span of all industrialized nations.

It is not only physicians that are flocking to Functional Medicine, says Dr. Grisanti. Chiropractors, nurses, dietitians, acupuncturists, nutritionists, naturopaths, and even dentists are studying the science of Functional Medicine. All graduates of Functional Medicine University are asked to fill out a questionnaire.  They are asked several questions, however, the question that resonates the most is, what happened and why did you decide to learn Functional Medicine?  The answers were astounding says, Dr. Grisanti.  Most graduates answered that they were disillusioned with modern day medicine and that they went to school to learn how to help people, however, they feel that they are losing.

So what is functional Medicine all about? Sir William Osler, one of the first professors at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and later its Physician-in-Chief famously said: "The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease."
