Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) announces the sponsorship of six additional Afterschool Meals Program sites, a subcomponent of the Child Care Food Program, designed to provide nutritious snacks and meals to children in afterschool programs, at no charge to students. The new sites include, Davie Elementary School and Plantation, Piper, McArthur, Northeast and Dillard high schools. A total of 50 BCPS schools will now serve supper through this program.
Students enrolled in the aftercare or other enrichment programs at the 50 participating schools will enjoy a nutritious early dinner before going home, as well as a snack if they are picked up later. Meals include milk, fruits and vegetables, grains and breads and meat or meat alternate. The supper meals meet The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) meal pattern requirements. The District currently provides approximately 8,000 supper meals to students daily.
“The supper program is for children in low-income families who are at risk of not getting their daily nutritional needs met,” said Mary Mulder, director of Food and Nutrition Services for BCPS, whose department is responsible for implementing the Afterschool Meals Program. “For many families, resources are not available to provide a complete meal in the evening. This program is a safety net to assure that some of our neediest students eat a nutritious dinner as well," said Mulder.
