FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – For the fourth consecutive year, local students were energized with inventive lessons in math, science and the environment through Broward Center for the Performing Arts educational programs sponsored by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL).

“Using the arts to spark students’ creativity and deepen their interest in science, technology, engineering and math turns the STEM curriculum into STEAM, which can power kids’ curiosity and deepen their connection to learning,” said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley.

FPL provided the underwriting for the recent annual Math & Science Day at the Broward Center, during which 200 second grade students from Bethune Elementary learned math and science skills through stagecraft and weather. FPL also sponsored the sold-out Smart Stage Matinee performance of Doktor Kaboom: Live Wire! The Electricity Tour at Parker Playhouse and provided complimentary tickets to students from Lake Forest Elementary and Bethune Elementary.

“FPL clearly understood the Broward Center’s status as a cultural institution that provides exceptional venues and programming opportunities that both entertain and excite students about learning,” said Tim Hogans, external affairs manager, FPL. “If we can capture our students’ passion for learning about math and science at an early age, we will be well on our way to finding the next engineers and scientists to build the workforce of tomorrow which will ultimately make our communities better places to live and do business.”

During Math & Science Day at the Broward Center, students became stage technicians to explore light, color, sound, perspective, balance and counterbalance in the theater; determined the direction of the wind and identified cloud formations along the Riverwalk; and feasted on fractions and measurements in a cookie-decorating math lesson.

Co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center, Doktor Kaboom: Live Wire! The Electricity Tour hilariously teaches the fundamentals of electrical energy including such topics as safety; lightning bolts; current and voltage; light emission; magnetic fields; electromagnetic coils and conductors.

Home to the largest free arts-in-education program in the nation, the Broward Center welcomes more than 150,000 students per year to programs that enhance children’s academic achievements with a direct correlation to state standards, literacy and curriculum goals. Corporate support for these educational programs allows the Center to continue to build these initiatives and serve more students each year.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

ADT Security Services, AutoNation, Bank of America, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, Latam Airlines Group, MasterCard, Paramount Refreshment Solutions, Rick Case Automotive Group and the Sun-Sentinel are proud sponsors of the Broward Center.
