BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Commissioner Mark Bogen says the people have spoken and it's clear that they want transportation network services such as Uber back in Broward. After receiving hundreds of calls and e-mails from constituents, the Commissioner has developed a new Transportation Network Company (TNC) ordinance that addresses public safety and accommodates transportation network companies.

Broward County Commissioner Mark BogenBroward County Commissioner Mark Bogen"I sent out a mail survey asking people what they wanted and the response was overwhelming.  My constituents told me that they want a safe ride and want Uber back in Broward.  I'm following the will of people.  This ordinance provides a high level of public safety and at the same time allows TNCs to operate with some autonomy," said Commissioner Bogen.

The proposed amendments to the current TNC ordinance keep intact requirements for background checks and liability insurance, but shift the procedural responsibility for enforcement to the TNCs with strict county oversight.

Under the new plan, TNCs would contract with drivers and certify that safety requirements have been met before allowing the driver onto a company's internet platform.  National and statewide background checks would be required, but could be processed through the County or a third party without the need for fingerprinting.  Transportation network companies would be required to file a certificate of insurance demonstrating blanket coverage for all TNC drivers.  The county would be allowed to audit and inspect TNC records to ensure full compliance with the proposed ordinance.

"People want the service and have asked the county to be more flexible in regulating transportation network companies.  I've heard from residents and held numerous meetings with TNC representatives.  I believe this proposal will allow TNCs to operate successfully and satisfy the needs of people without compromising safety," said Commissioner Bogen.

The proposal will be discussed at the County Commission's regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, August 11, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Broward Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Room 422 in Fort Lauderdale.
