Thanks to a grant request submitted by the Broward Education Foundation,120 students at Western High School will have the opportunity to learn and apply STEM skills beyond the classroom.

The Innovation Generation grant for $5,000 is from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions Inc. Motorola Solutions Foundation provides $60,000 for a fifth year to challenge Florida’s district-wide local education foundations to inspire students through projects designed to help them solve real-world problems in science, math, technology and engineering (STEM) areas this school year through a grant to the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF).

Broward Education Foundation’s project was one of 11 chosen from among 36 applicants to receive $5,000 through a competitive judging process with each application being reviewed and scored by a panel of STEM industry professionals through the CFEF.

The project, titled Empower Student’s STEM Imagination and Innovation, is designed for an initiative that utilizes 3-D modeling and 3-D printing to increase student interest in STEM with hands-on and inquiry-based projects in biotechnology, robotics, rocketry and solar car.

“These students, under the direction of their teacher Chin-Tang Lui, Ph.D., a founder of the Western High School STEM Academy, and business partner Alex Marron, a business engineering manager at Motorola Solutions Engineers, will not only improve their problem solving abilities but will also come away with a significantly increased interest in STEM,” said Thomas Severino, president and CEO of Broward Education Foundation. “We want to continue to motivate them to take more challenging STEM courses and pursue STEM careers after high school.”

The project will allow Western High School to further strengthen its existing partnership with Motorola Solutions Engineers and develop a robust and sustainable program that allows more students the opportunity to participate in bi-weekly after-school and weekend programs from now through March when students will receive a minimum of 20 hours of professional training in 3-D modeling and 3-D printing.

Students in the Western High School STEM Academy, whose curriculum motto is “Imagine the Impossible,” have been inspired to adopt innovative thinking to explore cutting edge engineering designs and experimental testing. This project is being built on the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in proliferating STEM-oriented opportunities for student career endeavors and inspiration.

“The Motorola Solutions Foundation created the Innovation Generation Grant program eight years ago to support educational experiences that spark students to turn their dreams into the innovations that will shape our society’s future,” said Matt Blakely, director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “Organizations like the Broward Education Foundation are teaching tomorrow’s leaders that careers in engineering and technology are not only fun, but also within their reach.”
