Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  – United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse (UWBCCSA) held “Let’s Talk: The State of Mental Health Town Hall Meeting” on Friday, October 14th at Nova Southeastern University. During the panel, Elkin Alfred, Prevention Specialist at UWBCCSA, introduced guests to the newly-launched UWBCCSA Mental Health Promotion Action Team and the team’s activities that are aimed at enhancing the capacity of Broward County residents to take control of their lives and health, promoting resiliency, decreasing suicide rates and eliminating the stigma associated with mental illness.

The panel addressed topics related to mental illness and suicide including how to build awareness in our community and what organization leaders are doing to increase mental health promotion activities countywide. Presentations were also given by Dr. Charlene Grecsek, Coordinator at ESE/SS Multiagency Network for Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, and Jackie Rosen, Executive Director/CEO of Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention. The event ended with a Q&A session for attendees and the panelists.
