BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward Commissioners individually expressed their condolences to the victims of the shooting at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. Tuesday's regularly scheduled meeting is the first time Commissioners have met since the violent attack that killed five people and left six wounded.

"Our moment of silence today takes on special meaning as our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers are with the victims, family members and our entire community," said Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief.  "We continue to mourn and at the same time we must move forward as a community and a nation and direct our attention to the acts of love and kindness and goodwill that was shown by our residents, employees, and complete strangers who reached out to help one another as they were united by one event that will no doubt change the lives of everyone.  Each of them in their own way is a true hero."

Broward Vice Mayor Beam Furr thanked the County Administrator, Airport Director and Sheriff for their work during and in the days following the incident. "These kind of situations tear in the trust we have with each other.  We've seen it across the nation, it tears at our hearts and we need to take every moment we can to try to restore our faith in each other," Furr said.

"I want to express my thanks and concern for all of the people that were affected by this horrible tragedy.  I want to compliment the county employees, the first responders, the call center employees, all of the unsung heroes who work behind the scenes to help people who are rightfully scared and nervous. My condolences to the victims and everyone affected," said Commissioner Michael Udine.

"Our diversity, strength and tolerance brought us all together as a community to work through this tragedy.  I also want to extend my condolences to those who lived through this harrowing experience," said Commissioner Nan Rich.

"I'd like to also express my condolences to those that we've lost.  I also would like to acknowledge and thank our Airport Director Mark Gale and County Administrator Bertha Henry for doing such a great job in such a stressful situation," said Commissioner Mark Bogen.

"I join my colleagues in recognizing our community, Broward County, the state, and our nation for the many brave men and women who put themselves in harm's way and protected the ten thousand or more people who were at the airport at the time of this tragedy," said Commissioner Tim Ryan.

"Our roles here are to represent the people of this community and those who visit us.  My condolences to the five lives that were lost, the numerous people who have been through Broward Health medical facilities and to those who are still there. Our community came together to do the right thing," said Commissioner Chip LaMarca who noted that we have "the best of the best" in reference to the many law enforcement agencies responding to the incident.

"Let's not let this act stop us from living fully because we must still live fully.  The greatness of our nation, is that under circumstances and situations like these, no matter what you're ethnicity or your background, we come together and we help each other and that was quite evident in what occurred in the aftermath of this event," noted Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness.

"All of us share our thoughts and prayers with both those that were murdered and with the wounded and hope for a speedy recovery for those that are recovering," said Commissioner Steve Geller who also cautioned against "over reacting" when discussing future airport security procedures.

Commissioners noted that County employees, the Red Cross, and numerous local businesses worked tirelessly to assist thousands of people in need of food, blankets, phones, chargers, shelter and general information and services.  The Broward County Commission meeting can be viewed online.  Information about the Commission can be found on Broward.org/commission on Facebook and Twitter.
