Aventura Arts & Cultural Center to present Slow Burn Theatre Company
Thursday, April 04, 2013 at 10:00 am

AVENTURA – Aventura Mayor Susan Gottlieb today announced that Boca Raton's critically acclaimed Slow Burn Theatre Company will transfer two productions in its 2013-14 season to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center after their runs at West Boca Performing Arts Theater. The non-profit regional theater will present the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Next to Normal (November7 -10, 2013) and the musical favorite Chess from the musical creators of the hit Mamma, Mia! (April 10-13, 2014).

"The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and Slow Burn Theater Company both made theatrical debuts three years ago and each has made an impact on its respective community in a relatively short time," Mayor Gottlieb said. "This new collaboration is a milestone for both organizations and continues to fulfill the Center's mission of bringing cultural opportunities to the people who live, work and visit Aventura."

A member of the South Florida Theatre League, Slow Burn Theatre Company employs local artists and offers opportunities to students in mounting full-scale productions of inspiring, intelligent musicals for the South Florida community. The company's current season continues with Sweeney Todd and The Wedding Singer while past productions have included musical theater favorites Avenue Q, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Rocky Horror Show and Into the Woods as well as the lesser-produced works Side Show, Urinetown, Bat Boy, Blood Brothers, Assassins and Xanadu. The troupe will produce a four-show 2013-14 season in Boca Raton that also presents Parade and High Fidelity.
"Slow Burn Theatre Company is devoted to presenting contemporary musicals. Those shows that if you weren't in New York at the right time you might never have seen," said Patrick Fitzwater who co-founded the company with Matthew Korinko. "These musicals dig deeper than their predecessors and address the topics and struggles of more recent times. Consequently, our shows appeal to a broad spectrum of audience members and we look forward to bringing part of our 2013-14 season to Aventura."
Only the eighth musical to receive the Pulitzer-Prize for Drama, the rock musical Next to Normal was nominated for 11 Tony Awards® and won three: Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. With book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, the musical is an emotionally honest look at a mother who struggles with bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. With provocative lyrics and a thrilling score, this musical shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family's world intact.

With lyrics by Sir Tim Rice, who penned the international blockbusters Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, The Lion King and Aida, and music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of the rock group ABBA, Chess boasts what Time magazine called, "One of the best rock scores ever produced." The game becomes a metaphor for romantic rivalries, competitive gamesmanship, super power politics and international intrigues as a loutish American chess star, an earnest Russian champion and a Hungarian American female assistant create a romantic triangle that travels from Bangkok to Budapest to the pulse of a monumental score that includes "One Night in Bangkok" and "Heaven Help My Heart."

Tickets for performances of Next to Normal at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center go on sale April 12 followed by Chess tickets being available in the fall. Tickets for the Aventura engagements of each production are $34.50 and $39.50. That gold record classic earned her the distinction of being the first solo female artist at Motown to win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance.

Ms. Houston has rocked NBC's Today show, performed with Aretha Franklin and Mary Wilson on "Love, Rhythm and Blues" for PBS, toured with Cher's "Living Proof" concert and headlined at Harrah's in Las Vegas.

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Presents Biloxi Blues
Friday, March 22, 2013 at 04:37 pm

AVENTURA – The City of Aventura presents Neil Simon's multiple Tony Award®-winning Broadway play Biloxi Blues on Friday, March 29 at 8 p.m. at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.  Biloxi Blues chronicles the trials and tribulations of Brooklyn-born Eugene Morris Jerome and his fellow Army inductees as they struggle through basic training near Biloxi, Mississippi in 1943. An aspiring writer who sees himself as an outsider observing the craziness around him, Eugene hopes to somehow remain "neutral . . . like Switzerland." Simon brings his acclaimed combination of humor and humanity to this comedy about young men going off to war.

Produced by Montana Rep, one of the oldest and most respected touring companies in the country, Biloxi Blues also is a timeless tale of  the "universal" soldier as Simon's characters face the same loneliness, anxieties and fears that have seized young recruits throughout history who are about to face combat.
Director Greg Johnson brings to the production firsthand experience, having been a stage manager for Biloxi Blues on Broadway at the start of his career and taking it on its first national tour. At 28, he said meeting and working with Neil Simon was a pivotal point for him. In an interview with the Missoulian, Johnson talked about working with Simon and taking his advice to heart, "He told me, 'Always play to the truth, never to the comedy. I've taken care of the comedy. I wrote the thing. It's funny.'"
Tickets are $39.00.  Tickets, group discounts and scheduling information for all performances are available through the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center's box office at (877) 311-7469 or online at  HYPERLINK "http://www.AventuraCenter.org" www.AventuraCenter.org.
