"You say tomato, I say shut up" comes to the Broward Center
Thursday, March 07, 2013 at 04:22 pm

YouSayTomatoFORT LAUDERDALE, Fl – You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up continues its National Tour in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts from Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 17 as part of the Off Broadway Series.  A comedy that People Magazine called "laugh out loud!" the comedy stars Kevin Bartini and Gabrielle Mirabella.

In this 75-minute tour de force, You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up, takes a humorous look at a relationship that seemed doomed by opposing personalities from the start. After trials and tribulations they learn to navigate the conflicts that come with romance, money and children by embracing each other's differences, taking on parenting as a competitive sport and dropping out of couple's therapy. Their delightfully crazy lifestyle has managed to keep their relationship intact, up-ending every idea you ever had about living "happily ever after."

After 17 years of marriage, writers-actors-and real-life-married-couple Annabelle Gurwitch (Dinner and a Movie, Fired!) and Jeff Kahn (The Ben Stiller Show, Forty Year Old Virgin) have adapted their hilarious, often moving, memoir, You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up! for the stage.  This production is directed by Patrick Walsh (based on the original direction by Darren Katz).

This uproariously funny story is sure to strike both laughter and terror into the hearts of any couple (not to mention every single man or woman who is contemplating the connubial state). The book was developed through sold-out performances at The Comedy Central Theatre and at Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles, and made its New York premiere at The New York Comedy Festival 2009.

Comedian Ben Stiller said, "Kahn and Gurwitch illuminate the insanity of marriage. They make you want to embrace your spouse for the same reason you want to strangle them."

Showtimes are Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 16 at 3 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $35. Tickets are available through the Broward Center's AutoNation Box Office at 954/462-0222 or online at www.BrowardCenter.org.

It's Jolly (Rodger) good fun as New York Gilbert & Sullivan players perform "Pirates of Penzance" at Parker Playhouse

FORT LAUDERDALE – Join the band of swashbuckling buccaneers, bumbling British bobbies, frolicsome Victorian maidens and the delightfully dotty "model of a modern Major-General" for a rollicking romp over the rocky coast of Cornwall as the acclaimed New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players perform the Pirates of Penzance on Friday, March 15 at 8 p.m. at Parker Playhouse.

This exuberant musical theater masterpiece, directed and conducted by Albert Bergeret with choreography by Bill Fabris, is performed in its original format. The rich sounds of full orchestra, chorus, and legitimate vocal soloists resonate with classic elegance and power while the company's vibrancy, energy and contemporary sense of humor keep the show alive and exciting for a modern audience.

The plot centers on the dilemma of young Frederic who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. Since he was born in leap year on February 29, he is honor bound to remain a pirate until the distant date of 1940, despite his moral objection to piracy.  Helping Frederic to deal with this unusual predicament are the brash Pirate King, Ruth - the pirate maid-of-all-work, romantic Mabel, and the delightfully stuffy Major-General Stanley.

Patter songs are a Gilbert & Sullivan trademark and Pirates of Penzance features the most famous of them all, "I am the very model of a modern Major-General." This jaunty tune has been cleverly set to different words countless times (Tom Lehrer's element song a notable example) and used in commercials to sell everything from Campbell's soup to Handi-wipes, cars, newspapers and other items. Pirates also contains some of Gilbert's most famous lyrics such as the often used quotation "a policeman's lot is not a happy one" from the act two lament of the diffident "men in blue." Other highlights of the show include "For I am a Pirate King," the pirates' "Here's a first rate opportunity," the policemen's "When the foeman bears his steel" and Mabel's show stopping coloratura aria "Poor wand'ring one."

New York Newsday wrote the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players productions is "One of the most joyous performances of The Pirates of Penzance it has been my privilege to witness."

Tickets are $40.50 and $50.50.  Tickets and group discounts are available at (954) 462-0222 or select your seat on-line at www.parkerplayhouse.com.  Tickets are also available for purchase at the Parker Playhouse Tuesday-Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
