FORT LAUDERDALE – Academy of St. Martin in the Fields appears in concert on Monday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with cellist Alisa Weilerstein and pianist Inon Barnatan. This concert concludes the Broward Center 2012-2013 Classical Series, which is generously underwritten by Gary and Rosemarie Wendt.
The program will include Britten's "Simple Symphony, Op. 4;" Haydn's "Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major, Op. 101;" Bach's "Piano Concerto No. 5 in F minor;" and Mozart's "Symphony No. 40 in G minor."
With a mission to uniquely interpret classical music in a fresh and vibrant way, the Academy is one of the world's foremost chamber orchestras. With more than 500 recordings, it is one of the most recorded chamber orchestras in the world with several Billboard chart-toppers. Its album "Romance of the Violin," was named Billboard Classical CD of the Year in 2004 and "Vivaldi's Four Seasons," reached number one on the Classical Chart in 2007.
The Seattle Times said, "The string sound is just gorgeous, big and pliant and vibrant and the ensemble level defies all expectations — every note, every attack, precisely in the right place. Incisive, committed playing brought every measure to life." American cellist Weilerstein became an exclusive recording artist for Decca Classics in 2010, the first cellist to be signed by the prestigious label in more than 30 years. Her 2012-13 season includes engagements across the U.S. as well as in Canada, Belgium, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Russia. A recipient of Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal prize for exceptional achievement and the Leonard Bernstein Award, she has appeared with all of the major orchestras throughout the United States and Europe with conductors including Marin Alsop, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Andrew Davis and Sir Mark Elder.
Described by London's Evening Standard as "a true poet of the keyboard", Barnatan is an avid chamber musician who recently completed three seasons as a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's CMS Two program. Other chamber music performances include the complete Beethoven piano and violin sonatas at the Concertgebouw, the Bergen International Festival in Norway, the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, the Delft and the Verbier Festivals and the Lyon Musicades. In 2008, he received the Andrew Wolf Memorial Award in Rockport, awarded every two years to an exceptional chamber music pianist.
The event includes complimentary admission to "A Taste of Music" pre-concert lecture and wine tasting with Lyn Farmer exploring how all the senses work together to enhance our enjoyment of music. The lecture takes place at 6:30 p.m.
