FORT LAUDERDALE – The Americana Music Association’s “Lifetime Achievement for Songwriting” award-winner John Hiatt and “Lifetime Achievement for Performance” award-winner Taj Majal come to the Au-Rene Theater at Broward Center for the Performing Arts as John Hiatt & The Combo and the Taj Mahal Trio perform on Tuesday, August 18 at 8 p.m.
With a soulful, gritty voice, which mirrors the gravity of his reflective lyrics, Hiatt continues to write brilliant character studies with entertaining storylines and wry humor. In his latest release, Terms of My Surrender, he weaves hidden plot twists into fictional tales with topics including redemption, relationships, growing older and surrendering—on his terms.

His songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt (“Thing Called Love”), Emmylou Harris, Iggy Pop, Rosanne Cash (#1 country hit, “The Way We Make A Broken Heart”) and the Jeff Healey Band (“Angel Eyes”). Hiatt earned a Grammy nomination for Crossing Muddy Waters, while B.B. King and Eric Clapton shared a Grammy for their album Riding with the King, on which the title track was a Hiatt composition.

Known for captivating crowds with his exceptional guitar performances and enthusiasm, Hiatt was called by the Los Angeles Times “…one of rock’s most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years.”

Through decades of recording and touring, Taj Mahal nearly singlehandedly reshaped the definition and scope of the blues with his infusion of exotic sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.

His introduction to “An Evening with Taj Mahal” at the Grammy Museum read, in part: “One of the most prominent figures in late 20th century blues and roots music, composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and two-time Grammy winner Taj Mahal has played an enormous role in revitalizing and preserving traditional acoustic blues…he is one of the most sought after and respected musicians across genres, cultures, age groups and geographic boundaries.”

Mahal has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards. And, since the release of 2008’s Maestro, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album, he has been busy touring and recording at a whirlwind pace. His most recent release is a box set featuring all of his LPs from 1968-1976 entitled The Complete Columbia Albums Collection.
