FORT LAUDERDALE – The sounds of South Africa come to South Florida with the Grammy Award–winning Soweto Gospel Choir on Sunday, November 22 at 6 p.m. at Parker Playhouse. The 2015 North American Tour of Soweto Gospel Choir is sponsored by South African Airways.

Twenty voices strong, the choir draws on the best talent from many churches around Soweto, then travels the world sharing the unique and inspirational power of African gospel music. Combining African gospel with traditional hymns, American pop and spiritually themed secular songs, the Soweto Gospel Choir delivers a powerful expression of hope and joy full of gorgeous South African vocal harmonies.
The Soweto Gospel Choir has taken home two Grammy Awards in the Best Traditional World Music Album category for its releases African Spirit and Blessed. The ensemble received the inaugural International Achievement Award at the South African Music Awards held at Sun City and honors include American Gospel Music Awards for “Best Choir” and “Best International Choir.” It added a Sports Emmy Award for its collaboration with U2 as the featured South African artist on the songs “Streets Have No Name,” “Magnificent” and “Boots” for ESPN’s promotional campaign for the 2010 World Cup.

The JM Family Enterprises Smart Stage Matinee Series also presents the Soweto Gospel Choir to students on Monday, November 23 at 10:30 a.m. Suggested for students in grades 6 – 12, the performance supports lessons in multiculturalism, music and social studies. The shows in the JM Family Enterprises Smart Stage Matinee Series are performed by professional theater companies and promote reading skills and science- and math-related knowledge by making challenging concepts accessible and interesting to students. Tickets are $7.20 and $5 for groups of 10 or more with $3 lap seat tickets available for infants 12 months and younger.
