Gustavo Romero

Davie, FL – Labeled “a pianist of genius” by The Washington Post, Gustavo Romero will perform a program of works by Schumann, Dutilleux and Ginastera as the opening concert of the Bailey Hall Chamber Series on Sunday, September 25 at 3 p.m.

In addition to frequent appearances at Bailey Hall, Romero has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony, Houston Symphony, Boston Pops Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Radio France Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Shanghai Orchestra and Russian Symphony Orchestra, among others.

“Gustavo Romeo has performed in the great concert halls of the world including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, London’s Barbican, the Great Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and the Berlin Philharmonie,” said Dr. Dan Barnard, associate dean of cultural affairs and director of Bailey Hall. “We are excited to bring such a talent to South Florida to kick off the truly exceptional Chamber Series which Dr. Jure Rozman is expertly curating.”

A native of San Diego with heritage in Guadalajara, Mexico, Romero won his first piano competition at the age of five and seven years later performed with the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta before attending the Juilliard School at 14. His many prizes and recognitions include first prize in the prestigious Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland, The Avery Fisher Career Grant and The Musical America Young Artist Award.

Romero was the subject of a feature film about his life and artistry, Portrait in Piano, and his recordings include works by Chopin, Mompou, Debussy, Albeniz, Scarlatti and the five Beethoven concerti with the English Chamber Orchestra.

In reviewing a performance, The New York Times reported, "Mr. Romero has great agility, adequate power and an unusually large repertory of colors and dynamic levels. More important, these virtues evoked a sense of the music at hand rather than mere piano techniques."

The Bailey Hall Chamber Series continues with Broward College Chamber Players (October 1), Delray String Quartet (October 8), Piazzolla: A Tango Nuevo with Tomas Cotik and Tao Lin (November 12), Cabaret in Paris (March 2), A Musical Journey (March 19) and Four-Hand Piano Works with Gustavo Romero and Massimo Somenzi.

Tickets are available for $8-$15 and can be purchased by visiting www.baileyhall.org or contacting the Bailey Hall box office at (954) 201-6884. The box office and phone lines are open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
