FORT LAUDERDALE – A pre-concert discussion and wine tasting kicks off an evening of classical music with a twist as musicians and the audience interact in Symphonia Boca Raton with Jan Mracek: Drama & Virtuosity conducted by James Judd on Thursday, December 8 at 8 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

 Symphonia Boca Raton

Classical with A Twist offerings invite music lovers to kick off their heels, loosen their ties and get ready for an up-close and casual experience with classical. While the music will be traditional, the experience will be unconventional. The boundaries that normally delineate the stage from the house will disappear with interaction between the artists and the audience throughout the evening.

Led by James Judd and featuring award-winning Czech violinist Jan Mracek, the Symphonia, Boca Raton will perform two of the most important works of the classical repertoire, Schubert’s “Symphony No. 4” and the Brahms Violin Concerto.

Schubert’s “Tragic” Symphony, written when he was only 19 years old, is filled with intensity and rhythmic energy as well as exquisite lyricism and poetic eloquence. The Brahms Violin Concerto, with its majestic and dramatic opening movement, its profoundly beautiful slow movement and its exuberant Hungarian gypsy finale, is one of the greatest and most difficult violin concertos in the repertoire.

One hour prior to the performance, the Broward Center’s resident music historian, Lyn Farmer, along with Judd and members of the orchestra, will provide an engaging pre-show lecture that combines a wine tasting and musical examples to help heighten audience members’ understanding and appreciation of the performance to come.

Classical with A Twist returns January 12 as the Amernet String Quartet performs in a cabaret-style evening of short sections of music, conversation and video accompaniment.
