truewest square“Shepard’s masterwork…It tells us a truth, as glimpsed by a 37-year-old genius”, said the New York Post of Sam Shepard’s comedy of menace, True West. This American classic explores alternatives that might spring from the demented terrain of the California landscape. Sons of a desert dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer clash over a film script. Austin, the achiever, is working on a script he has sold to producer Saul Kimmer when Lee, a demented petty thief, drops in and pitches his own story to the producer. “I wanted to write a play about double nature…”, said playwright Sam Shepard, “I just wanted to give a taste of what it feels like to be two-sided. It’s a real thing, double nature. I think we’re split in a much more devastating way than psychology can ever reveal.”

New City Players’ production reunites several of its early members who staged Rabbit Hole back in 2014 with Mary Gundlach (Becca in NCP’s Rabbit Hole) directing and Rachel Smoker Cox (Nat in NCP’s Rabbit Hole) stage managing. It also marks founding member and sometime director, Andrew Paul Davis’ South Florida stage debut and Artistic Director Tim Davis’ return to the stage since NCP’s 2015 production of Red.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of New City Players’ production is that brothers Tim and Andrew Davis will be playing brothers Lee and Austin in the play…an event that is not to be missed!

True West marks the third and final production of New City Players’ second season. True West will be directed by ensemble member Mary Gundlach. It will star founding members Andrew Paul Davis & Timothy Mark Davis, along with John Holley & Lory Reyes. The production will be held at The Vanguard (1501 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale 33316). Performances run August 10-27 (Thursdays-Saturdays at 8pm; Sundays at 2pm). Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $20 for students and can be purchased online at newcityplayers.org or by calling (954)-650-5938.

“In an exploration of our dual natures, an uncomfortable truth about the human condition is unraveled as two estranged brothers attempt an unlikely reconnection,” says director Mary Gundlach. “This dark comedy reveals to us the threatening facets of family ties, but with a pinch of hilarity.”
