Humane Society Pets

Fort Lauderdale, FL – Hurricane Irma left the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) without power for three days.  Sadly the Upper Keys Humane Society located in Key Largo may not have power for weeks or possibly months.  Prior to the storm, staff from the shelter in Key Largo drove their 55 cats and five dogs, that had been in their adoption area, to the Humane Society of Broward County to ride out the storm safely.  Now that the hurricane has passed, the Key Largo staff drove back to their shelter and assessed the area.  While their building is still standing they felt it was in the best interest of the animals that they remain at the HSBC to find new homes.

As we have seen, the Keys suffered a lot of damage and for residents there, adopting a pet is most likely not on their minds.  It is also unknown how long the shelter will be without power.

The animals have already settled in at the HSBC and some will be available starting on Thursday, September 14.

All services at the Humane Society of Broward County are now open including adoptions, vaccine clinic and spay/neuter surgeries for the public’s pets.

Please call 954-989-3977 ext. 6 for more information.  To view the pets available for adoption or to make a donation to help the shelter visit www.humanebroward.com.
