Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs. Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs. On Tuesday May 6, 2014, Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs will participate on a panel at the White House for the release of the Third National Climate Assessment. The report, compiled by the National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee, will inform the nation about the status of our current climate, detail observed changes since the last assessment and forecast future trends.
Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, who is also a member of President Obama's State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience, will give remarks on local government's responses to climate change as well as the real world implications of the National Climate Assessment.
"I am honored to be asked to be a part of such a distinguished panel of national leaders and experts in their fields. The National Climate Assessment is important because it quantifies what we are experiencing and gives us a data-based foundation from which to plan for the future. If we understand what is happening we can take action and plan for the future. We don't have to let talk about climate change be only about doom and gloom, there is much we can do right now."
The National Climate Assessment establishes consistent methods for evaluating climate impacts in the United States in the context of broader global climate change. Several senior White House officials including Dr. John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator will discuss the report findings. Additionally, a panel of scientists, business leaders, and government leaders will discuss how the National Climate Assessment will be used.
