Farm fresh foods, locally grown produce, and organic eggs and honey can be found year-round in Fort Lauderdale. You just have to know where to look.
Every Sunday, the Las Olas Green Market sets up shop at the corner of Las Olas Boulevard and SE 12th Avenue from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. Vendors offer freshly baked breads and pastries, pies, empanadas, hummus, farm-grown fruits and vegetables, local honey and pollen products, spices and teas, fresh seafood, orchids, plants and fresh cut flowers.
The same folks run the Coral Ridge Green Market on Saturdays at Plaza 3000, 3000 N. Federal Hwy., from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. This one's a little smaller than the one on Las Olas, but it also offers baked goods, pies, local fresh produce, orchids, spices, teas and other things. It closed for two months of the summer when things slowed down in 2011, and owner Rachel O'Neill says closings for the coming year remain to be determined.
Marando Farms offers a year-round market, bringing fresh locally grown foods to its spacious indoor store at 1401 SW. 1st Ave. Fort Lauderdale. A family-run operation with the philosophy focused on sustainable foods and farms. In the owners' own words, it's "dedicated to saving Florida's farms and ranch land, promoting healthy farming practices and supporting farms and farmers." The market is open every day except Wednesday. They also have a co-op that offers members monthly shipments of honey, fresh eggs, dairy, beef, poultry, and pork.
If you're willing to go a little farther afield, the Yellow Green Farmers Markets at 1940 N. 30th Rd. in Hollywood offers 300 vendors under one roof on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a. m. to 4 p. m. It's one-stop shopping for everything from fresh herbs and fresh caught fish, to Amish butter and quail eggs.
