Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt's Next to Normal is a musical drama about a mother who struggles with bi-polar disorder and how her illness affects her family. Next to Normal won a Tony award for Best Original Score and also received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming only the eighth musical in history to be awarded the honor.
The Pulitzer Board called the show "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family; and proclaimed that the show "expands the scope of subject matter for musicals."
The students of South Broward High School are excited about the prospect of possibly bringing this production to the Florida State Thespian Festival, where over 7,500 Florida high school students compete to go to the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska.
