Thanksgiving is a cherished American tradition. It is a special day when we gather to give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy as individuals and as a nation.

We are grateful for the precious gifts of freedom, peace and independence. We are thankful for the love of our family, friends and neighbors. We are mindful of the tremendous courage and sacrifices made by our ancestors to ensure our liberties, and we express our deep appreciation to the men and women in our Armed Forces who continue to defend our shores.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect upon the past and look forward to the future with hope. It is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and recognize that our greatest achievements have been accomplished together.

Nearly 400 years ago, the Pilgrims shared their first harvest in the New World with their Native American neighbors. Today, we are reminded that each of us has a responsibility to carry on this tradition of sharing by giving of ourselves to help those in need.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving in our Centennial year, I encourage everyone to join in reaffirming our commitment to make a difference. Over the past year, our community has risen to the challenge by completing more than 200,000 hours of community service as part of the Mayor's Volunteer Challenge. We have touched the lives of thousands and demonstrated the power of community involvement.

During Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season, please continue to give back by helping a neighbor, tutoring a child, assisting a senior citizen, or lending a hand to your favorite charity. By doing so, each of us can make a profound difference in the lives of others, while making Fort Lauderdale an outstanding place to live, work, play and raise a family.
