Olympic medals are on the minds of some students at Driftwood Middle School. The school is teaming with Special Olympics of Broward County to host the second annual Middle School Mini-Special Olympics at the school (2751 N 70th Terrace, Hollywood) on Wednesday, March 28 at 10 a.m.
Over 120 special needs students from Driftwood and 10 other Broward middle schools will take part in track and field events including: 50m dash, assisted 25m walk, 30m wheelchair slalom, 4x25 relay, standing long jump, bean bag toss, tennis ball throw and hula (hoop) toss. The students have been in training since late February with the assistance of teachers and their eighth grade “buddies.” Thirty Driftwood students have volunteered to assist participants from Driftwood and the other schools on the day of the event.
From 1 - 1:30 p.m. the students will have lunch and take part in an awards ceremony.
The purpose of the event is to bring special needs students together in a competitive spirit and to bring fitness awareness to the special needs population. As a health and wellness magnet school, Driftwood Middle has a particular interest in hosting the competition.
