US Sailing President, Emmy award winning commentator and America's Cup veteran Gary Jobson spoke at the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation dinner last night. It was a special evening filled with colorful stories of sailing adventures. Before the dinner, Gary stopped by the sailing center to address a crowd of over 50 junior sailors. They all were thrilled by his stories, advice and videos. Thank you Gary for helping make the day a memorable one for so many young skippers.

Team LYC invades Naples for the Naples Cup

Nov 16, 2011 11:21 am | newsletter writer

Lauderdale Yacht Club hauled close to 50 sailors, boats and families to Naples last weekend for the Naples Cup. This is always one of the most popular events for our team as evidenced by the level of participation. We will only touch on a few highlights here. Martina Sly was the top LYC Opti finisher placing 3rd overall, 1st in Red, and top girl. She was joined in the top ten by Nic Muller, Mack Fox, Wade Wadell, and Alie Toppa in 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th respectively. Paul Streater, Sophia Reineke, Eduardo Mintzias, and Liza Toppa all cracked the top 20. I won't try to list all of the LYC kids in this report, but here are a few notable results: Jensen McTighe and Luke Welker finished 7th and 9th in blue. Garrett Dixon and Caroline DuBois-Weber finished 2nd and 4th in white. In the green fleet Conner Correll finished 3rd and Joey Meagher finished 5th. For all of the opti results, visit: http://ncscnaples.blogspot.com/p/naples-cup.html

Over on the Laser course, members of the LYC program enjoyed some nice results. The following is coach Fred Strammer's report with a forward by Are Friesecke (Fred is the new high school/Laser coach at LYC. He is a recent graduate of Brown University where he was an all-American sailor 3 times):

Please find below the report from Fred and congratulations to Erik Weis placing 1st, following by Ethan Lounsbury in 7th, Dana Rohde in 8th, Brandon Kirby in 9th and Sarah Streeter in 10th. Also competing were Curtis Woodworth, Brendon Shanahan, Nathan Fields, James Pulsford, John Hench. Naples Cup Report:

Both days we saw Northeast winds dying to the East throughout the day as the front passed and the land heated up each day with a dying Northwesterly swell. Recognizing when the breeze was starting to die and shift right was important in setting up for the persistent shift. Otherwise, the water was mostly flat and the puffs and lulls easy to read on the water. Boats that did well leveraged out to a side and waited to tack in the dominant shift. It was also important to come into the top mark from an edge. Boats that worked the middle tended to tack more and have less leverage and opportunity to gain on the fleet. We also discussed how important it is to pick good lanes on the beat and especially the run--something we all still need to work on. Additionally, we are all improving on our boat setup, transitions and vang sheeting. As a team, we had mostly good starts but need to improved on putting ourselves in high risk starting situations including OCS situations. Congratulations to Erik Weis for a consistent second day of racing to take the overall lead!

Womens' ACCs at New York Maritime

Summary

Saturday, November 12:

Competitors at the Women's ACCs had beautiful conditions on the East River today, with a south breeze from 10-20 knots all day and tons of sunshine, albeit with chilly temperatures. Racing began promptly at 10:00 AM and eight races were completed in each division. At the end of the day the B division boats hit the dock a few minutes after sunset. A big thanks goes out to the Maritime sailors for their hard work keeping the racing fair and efficient all day. Seven protests were filed resulting in four DSQs. Thanks to Jesse Combs, John Stock III, Ian Burman, Nick Ewenson, Brian Clancy, Dan Thompson and Mike Callahan for hearing the protests after a long day of racing. After day 1, Brown leads in a close battle with Yale, Charleston, and Georgetown right on their heels. Full scores can be found at: http://scores.collegesailing.info/f11/women-atlantic-coast/

Sunday, November 13:

Sunday brought similar conditions for the Women's ACC competitors but with a bit lighter breeze. 6 races were completed in each division to bring the total to 14 races each. Most of the races over the weekend were W6's due to our proximity to the very active East river shipping channel with a few W4's peppered in when the breeze got light. Another great day of racing and again my thanks go out to the Maritime sailors for running a great event. Thanks also to Nick Ewenson for hearing a breakdown request, resulting in average points awarded to Georgetown in race 12A. Congratulations to Yale for winning this year's Women's Atlantic Coast Championship in a tie-breaker over the University of Rhode Island and one point clear of Dartmouth.

Sailors with ties to LYC sailed well. Chanel Miller sailed a fantastic regatta in the B division for Rhode Island, and finished 2nd. Her team finished 2nd as well. Marissa Lihan, also sailing in B division finished 11th for the Midshipmen of Navy who finished 10th overall. Dominique Wright skippered B for USF, and finished 14th. The Bulls finished the regatta in 13th. Christina Lewis shared skippering the B division boat for the 18th overall St. Mary's team, and finished 18th.
