termitesFORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Termites are the leading damage causing pest in Florida. Reynolds Pest Management, Inc. urges homeowners on the Treasure Coast and in South Florida to stay up to date on termite inspections.

Termite Inspections are vital to keeping termites from nesting within a structure. Once termites find entrance to a non-guarded home or building they will immediately build their nests and begin feeding off the wooden structures. Homes that have cracks or small holes are more susceptible to termite infestations as this is an entry way for the pest.

Reynolds pest Management, Inc explains that termite inspections are the best way of prevention for termite outbreaks. Holes as small as 1/32 of an inch are large enough for termites to pass. Termite inspectors search for these openings and inspect the surroundings to decrease the chances of an outbreak.

South Florida’s Main Termites:

  • Subterranean Termites are the most aggressive termite in Florida. These termites lead to costly damage. The subterranean species are swarmers. This mean during mating season, the winged termites go into flight searching for a mate and landing in a new location to begin a new colony of termites. Subterranean termites nest underground in soil. The best way to prevent this species of termite from infesting a structure is to keep the structure from having direct contact with the soil. Vegetation should be clear from the surrounding of a home or building. Subterranean termites are attracted to moisture. If the structure has a least favorable environment such as moisture perhaps from leaking pipes, then the chance of a subterranean termite outbreak is less.

  • Drywood Termites are the second most common termite found in Florida. These are not subterranean, underground termites. Drywood termites infest drywood structures and do not need contact with the soil. Colonies of drywood termites are much smaller than subterranean termites and can infest in isolated wood areas. For example, within a home infested with drywood termites there may be several different colonies found within that home at the same time. Drywood termites can be difficult to notice because they will remain within the wooden structures. A sure sign will be wood pellet dropping from the colony.

Typically homeowners do not have the expertise to be able to discover termite activity. This is why Reynolds Pest Management, Inc encourages South Florida homeowners and business owners to have their properties inspected once a year for any termite activity. Detecting termites at an early stage will save the owners money and damage repair costs.
