FORT LAUDERDALE – South Florida’s acclaimed Slow Burn Theatre Company has announced its upcoming 2016-17 season, featuring four blockbuster musicals that will be presented exclusively at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

“Slow Burn Theatre was just nominated for 15 Carbonell Awards with nine for Big Fish, the first musical in its inaugural season at the Broward Center as a partner in the arts,” said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley. “We’re excited about every Slow Burn title in our 16-17 season, with great shows coming to both the Amaturo Theater and the Abdo New River Room.”

The 2016-17 Slow Burn Theatre Season will feature The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tony Award winning musicals Titanic: The Musical, Big River and Aida. Presented in the Amaturo Theater, the season will be directed and choreographed by Patrick Fitzwater.

The season begins with The Hunchback of Notre Dame (October 20 – November 6), based on the Victor Hugo novel with songs from the beloved Disney animated feature. From the Oscar–winning team Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid) and Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell) comes a lushly scored retelling of the epic story of love, acceptance, and what it means to be a hero.

Winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score, Titanic: The Musical continues the season (January 19 – February 5). Recalling the real millionaires, aristocrats and immigrants who sailed the “ship of dreams” during those fateful days in 1912, Titanic tells the story how the events unfolded with humor, pathos and stirring unforgettable music from the creative team of composer and lyricist Maury Yeston, book writer Peter Stone and orchestrator Ian Weinberger.

Mark Twain’s timeless classic sweeps audiences down the mighty Mississippi when Slow Burn Theatre presents Big River (March 16 – April 2). Winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Big River is a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana, propelled by music and lyrics by Roger Miller and a book by William Hauptmann.  Once again the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River amid hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming adventures.

The season culminates with Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida (April 20 – May 7). Winner of four Tony Awards, Aida is an epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal chronicling the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country, Amneris, an Egyptian princess, and Radames, the soldier they both love. With a book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls and David Henry Hwang, Aida and Radames's love for one another becomes a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

During the 2016-17 season, the Broward Center will present Avenue Q and Xanadu staged by Slow Burn Theatre in its Abdo New River Room cabaret-style theater space.

Avenue Q (November 10 – 20) is the winner of the Tony Awards “Triple Crown” for best musical, best score and best book. Part flesh, part felt and packed with heart, Avenue Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment where he meets the colorful types who help him finally discover his purpose in life.

Xanadu (February 16 – 26) is the hilarious roller skating musical adventure based on the 1980s cult movie classic which starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly and features the chart topping songs from the film: “Magic,” “Suddenly,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “All Over the World” and, of course, “Xanadu.” The far-out and funny tale follows a magical and beautiful Greek muse who aids a struggling artist in fulfilling his dream of opening a roller disco. The musical won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and a Drama Desk Award for Best Book.
