“Defending the Dream…Fifty Years Later" January 18-20, 2014

Fort Lauderdale –The MLKCC will partner with other community organizations as well as hosting the holiday parade and non -violence march on Monday January 20th, 2014 at The Dillard High School Football Field located at 2501 N.W.11th St Drive Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311. The weekend’s full line of events are as follows:

Saturday, January 18th

9:00 a.m. - African American Research Library and Cultural Center and Delevoe Park

Both located at 2650 N.W. 6th Street (Sistrunk Boulevard) in Fort Lauderdale.

MLK Day of Service & Celebration - MLKCC in collaboration with HandsOn Broward will provide service opportunities for every member of the family.  From making sandwiches for the homeless to writing letters to our service men and women overseas, there will be unlimited ways to celebrate through service!  The Day of Service will end at 12:00 noon with a huge birthday cake and party, celebrating Dr. King.

1:00 p.m. - African American Research Library and Cultural Center

“Change Yourself Before You Can Change Me” Teen Summit - This year’s summit is specifically designed by youth for youth who want to make a difference.  Teen oriented performances, celebrity appearances, youth awards and panel discussions featuring the student organization, The Dream Defenders. 

 

6:00 p.m. - Museum of Art, 1 East Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale

Opening Reception, “Bob Adelman: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement” in partnership with the Museum of Art.  Photographer Bob Adelman has photographed cover stories for countless magazines, including Esquire, Time, People, Life, New York, Harper’s Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine. His most recent book is King: The Photobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Abrams, 2004). An award-winning photographer, Adelman has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and his photographs have been exhibited at the Smithsonian, the American Federation of Arts, and several other institutions.  Join MLKCC to experience this very important photography exhibition.

Sunday, January 19th

5:00 p.m. - Sunrise Civic Center Theater, 10610 W. Oakland Park Boulevard, Sunrise

“Defending the Dream…50 Years Later, a gospel concert and variety show presented by the Caribbean Cultural Coalition, Inc. in association with the City of Sunrise and MLKCC featuring gospel, jazz and Caribbean music.   Free Admission. Call (954) 747-4646 or (954) 254-3749 for information.

KING HOLIDAY - Monday, January 20th

9:30 a.m. – Parade line-up at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, 591 N.W. 31st Avenue

10:30 a.m. – Parade starts at Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Sistrunk Boulevard

King Holiday Parade and Non-violence March will feature local marching bands, drum lines, floats and thousands of marchers from local social, civic, cultural, religious and hopefully your organization. Come with signs, banners, t-shirts promoting good will, service, non-violence and other ideals of Dr. King. 

 

11:30 a.m. - Dillard High School Otis Gray Football Field, 2501 N.W. 11th Street

King Holiday Battle of the Bands Competition will kick off immediately following the parade.  Join defending champions Deerfield Beach High School in this fierce but friendly competition in commemoration and celebration of Dr. King.  Vendor space is available. Local businesses, media, citizens of the community, and all interested parties are encouraged to support this annual initiative through sponsorship opportunities or Tax Deductible donations.
