POMPANO BEACH, FL – Be a super hero for cancer and Relay for Life on April 12 at Pompano Community Park. JOIN THE RELAY FOR LIFE MOVEMENT during the Relay For Life of Pompano Beach on April 12 and 13 at Pompano Community Park. Kids activities start at 4pm along with stage entertainment.
Opening with a heart-warming survivor’s lap and ceremony at 5 p.m., Relay is not a run or a race– it is a community coming together. Teams of people from your community come together at a local school or park to walk, run, stroll and roll against cancer, keeping at least one member of the team walking, representing the team at all times during the event. At 9 p.m., everyone gathers for a beautiful luminaria ceremony honoring all those who have fought cancer.
"Being a 2 time Breast Cancer Survivor, I Relay for many reasons: I Relay for my sincere belief in the American Cancer Society - how they helped me and many others in so very many ways. I Relay for my friends and relatives who have died and have lived through this horrible disease. I Relay for the life that I was given back due to the wonderful doctors and nurses that I had. I Relay for my successful and incredible journey and my now cancer-free life that I have thankfully been given back. And I Relay for the most wonderful support from my family, caregivers and friends that I am blessed to have had during this oh-so-difficult time in my life." --- Diane Hurwit.
There are many ways you can get involved:
In 2013, the Pompano Beach Relay raised almost $50,000 to fight cancer and this year’s chairs Pompano Beach commissioner Charlotte Burrie and community member Gwen Leys have set a goal to beat that. This year’s event will have kids activities starting at 4 p.m., face painting, clowns, games, booths, food, musicians, entertainment and much more during the overnight event in Pompano.
We are looking for volunteers for the Relay For Life, Team Captains, team members, sponsors and survivors who’d like to participate in the event. In each community, cancer survivors, young and old, are invited to participate in the Opening Ceremony of the Relay For Life by walking the Survivor’s Victory Lap around the track. This symbolic tribute honors cancer survivors and celebrates life! If you are or know a cancer survivor and would like them to be honored, please let us know by RSVPing at www.relayforlife.org/pompanobeachfl.
“Our volunteers work year-long to put Relay For Life together and when the day finally comes it is an amazing experience. We have all been touched by cancer in some way shape or form. Relay For Life is how we come together to fight this disease,” said Jessie Brooks, staff member at American Cancer Society. “We encourage everyone to join us; start a team, sponsor, let us honor you as a cancer survivor, or come out and enjoy the festivities! We will have face painting, games, lots of food and live entertainment”
On Relay night, participants pitch tents and decorate in the theme their team has chosen and everybody is “ready to Re-lay”. Throughout the evening and into the next day, participants enjoy entertainment, games, music, great food, camaraderie and tons of FUN. Long before the last walkers approach the finish line at closing ceremonies, new lifelong friends have been made, old friends and family have been hugged and all hearts have been touched by the magic that is Relay.
