To raise awareness about the impact of plastic on the environment, the City of Fort Lauderdale created the More Flavor, Less Plastic campaign, a community-wide initiative to eliminate plastic straws and reduce polystyrene and other single-use plastics, such as utensils and beverage and take-out containers.

This campaign has included banning sale of plastic straws citywide, banning use of polystyrene on City properties and facilities, and promoting reduction of other single-use plastics.

As we celebrated Earth Month in April, Fort Lauderdale 4th and 5th grade students were invited to participate in a contest where they were asked to create a poster that creatively conveys their love for our planet and highlights the importance of reducing plastic and polystyrene usage. Each Fort Lauderdale elementary school was provided a lesson plan, PowerPoint presentation, and instructions for the contest.

At the June 1 City Commission meeting, Commissioner Ben Sorensen presented certificates to all students who participated in the contest. Their posters are on display at the City Hall Art Gallery this month.
