Members of West Broward High School’s Do Something Club have tackled several worthwhile projects in the past, but their latest venture will make an impact on hunger in Haiti.

On Saturday, February 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 300 students, staff and community members will gather at the school (500 NW 209 Street, Pembroke Pines) to package 20,000 meals for shipment to an orphanage in Haiti.

Working in conjunction with the organization Feeding Children Everywhere, West Broward students raised $5,000, enough to purchase 20,000 meals. To raise the funds students sold sponsorships, t-shirts and handmade bracelets from Guatemala. Although each meal only costs $.25, it consists of ingredients that fight the urge of hunger and stop malnutrition: rice, protein, vegetables, vitamins and minerals, and can be prepared simply with boiled water.

The food boxes have been personalized and decorated by students who attend West Broward’s preschool program.  Young children attending the event will also have an opportunity to decorate boxes. This will be a family event and will include music and neighborhood vendors.

The mission of West Broward High School’s Do Something Club is to provide outreach locally and abroad to children, families and communities in need.
