FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Some Florida motorists won't have to pay for tickets based on red-light camera photos because of an Arizona company's processing delay, officials said.

The red-light camera notices still arrive in offenders' mailboxes but a delay in processing the tickets by American Traffic Solutions means there will be no consequence for more than 5,000 drivers if they don't pay, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Under Florida law, a traffic ticket is sent to offenders, followed by a second ticket if the first is not paid, and the tickets have to be processed within 60 days of a violation. If both tickets aren't processed in that time, the fine can never be enforced.

As a result, some red-light runners who got tickets recently in Broward and Palm Beach counties and don't pay the $158 fine in time will never have to pay, the Sun Sentinel said.

That means lost revenue for the counties.

"This is just not an acceptable business practice," said Pembroke Pines Commissioner Iris Siple.

ATS spokesman Charles Territo said the Arizona company has dealt with the problem to prevent future delays in Florida.

"ATS prides itself on our customer service," Territo said. "Make no mistake, we take this very seriously and have already taken steps to ensure it doesn't ever happen again."
