The ‘New Face’ of affordable housing in Broward County
Broward County Commissioners celebrated the Grand Opening of the Progresso Point affordable apartments at a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon. Broward Mayor John E. Rodstrom, Jr. and Commissioners Lois Wexler and Chip LaMarca joined city officials and community leaders at the event.
Progresso Point is a public private partnership between the Broward Housing Authority and the Reliance Housing Foundation. Broward County provided $250-thousand for a tax credit match to increase our community’s portfolio of affordable homes.
“This represents the new face of affordable housing in Broward County that is quality oriented and indistinguishable from market rate apartment complexes,” said Broward County Mayor John E. Rodstrom, Jr. “It is situated in a prime location of the county that is conveniently located for employees who work downtown, in surrounding areas and in the hospitality industries.”
In the last year, the county has successfully teamed up with ten affordable housing developers to deliver more than 1800 affordable homes to Broward County residents this year.
There’s no question that the need for workforce housing prevails. The Broward Housing Council’s 2011 Affordable Housing Needs Assessment found that despite increasing levels of affordability for existing single-family homes and condominiums due to the collapse of the housing “bubble”, overall housing affordability for existing renters had not improved.
“All residents of Broward County should have opportunities to access safe, decent and affordable housing countywide which is the cornerstone for healthy, successful and sustainable communities,” noted Commissioner Lois Wexler, who is also Chair of the Broward Housing Council.
