Mike Thornton As Obama Photo Credit Bill Hurd FORT LAUDERDALE – Still undecided about who to vote for in Florida's presidential primary election? Meet the Republican candidates of the 2012 election in the song "The Republican Candidate's Hello" to the tune of "Hello! (the Doorbell Song)" from the Broadway hit The Book of Mormon. President Barack Obama, GOP candidates, Hillary Clinton and more join the political party when the Capitol Steps returns to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Desperate Housemembers on Thursday, January 12 and Friday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, January 14 at 3 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, January 15 at 1 and 5 p.m. as part of the Broward Center's 2011-2012 Off-Broadway Series. This production may contain adult language and subject matter.
With riotous skits and hilarious parody songs, the Capitol Steps skew current events and politicians in a show that changes to fit the day's news. They will be performing songs from their newest album "Desperate Housemembers" including "March Like an Egyptian" to the tune of The Bangle's "Walk Like an Egyptian," "Fun, Fun, Fun 'Til Obama Takes Our Tea Bags Away" to the tune of the Beach Boy's "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Furry with the Singe On Top" to the tune of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" from Oklahoma!, "Hotel Arizona" to the tune of The Eagles' "Hotel California," "Under BP" to the tune of "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid, "New York, No Pork" to the tune of "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra, as well as tributes to Facebook, online dating and more.
Although it originated in Washington, D.C., the Capitol Steps usually perform outside of the beltway with accessible comedy that puts audiences in the loop. The Capitol Steps have recorded more than 30 albums and, for the past decade, produced quarterly specials for public radio and been featured in national specials on public television.
Appearing at the Broward Center will be Bari Biern, Mike Thornton, Morgan Duncan, Mike Tilford and Janet Gordon accompanied by pianist Howard Breitbart.
Democrats and Republicans have been skewed equally by the Capitol Steps and members of both parties are fans. Al Gore observed, "Some people in Washington are confused...but the Capitol Steps are not," while the first President George Bush wisecracked, "The Capitol Steps make it easier to leave public office."
