FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – More than 150 members of United Way of Broward County’s Tocqueville Society and guests were on hand as Alice and Mike Jackson were presented with the 2014 Tocqueville Society Award at a private reception at the home of Marti and Wayne Huizenga. Last year’s Tocqueville Society Award recipient Colin Brown was on hand to present the Jacksons with their award.

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson’s dedication to volunteerism, creative approach to serving the Broward community, outstanding leadership, long-term financial commitment, and encouragement to others to get involved, exemplify the qualities of a Tocqueville Society Award recipient.  The Jacksons have been committed donors to United Way of Broward County and champions for our community. Mr. Jackson has led the way with AutoNation’s sponsorship support and annual employee campaign providing resources to fund critical programs and services in our community.

United Way of Broward County’s Tocqueville Society was established to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of the most generous and community-minded investors. In the spirit of the French political thinker, Alexis de Tocqueville, and his admiration of voluntarism in America, United Way of America founded the Tocqueville Society in 1984.

The United Way of Broward County Tocqueville Society was founded in 1990 by community leaders Bob Elmore, Wayne and Marti Huizenga, Bob and Millicent Steele, and William and Norma Horvitz. The Tocqueville Society represents the collective caring power of more than 125 families who invest $10,000 or more per year in United Way of Broward County.  With more than 26,000 members nationwide, Tocqueville Society members stand as strong symbols of support for initiatives and programs that improve lives while building a stronger, healthier, more vibrant community.

Locally, as well as nationally, generous gifts from individual donors are what make it possible for United Way to improve lives, strengthen communities and partner with others to create long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place. These leaders in giving are visionaries and champions. They are people who advance the common good by funding initiatives that focus on the building blocks for a good life – a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family, and good health.
