FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – With the return of high gas prices, Tri-Rail will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the ninth annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 19.

As part of this effort, commuters who ride Tri-Rail on this special day will automatically be entered to win a family 4-pack to Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy on July 22, 2014 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts, plus a backstage tour of the popular show proclaimed "the grandest circus spectacle east of Vegas." Registered EASY Card holders who tap their card at any Tri-Rail station on June 19 will automatically be registered to win. Non-registered EASY Card holders and paper ticket users can register by visiting www.tri-rail.com on June 19 or 20 to enter their card or ticket number used on Dump the Pump Day.

"Dump the Pump Day is a good opportunity for commuters to try public transportation and recognize its value in saving money and time," said Bonnie Arnold, public information officer of SFRTA/Tri-Rail. "Tri-Rail is definitely the way to travel throughout South Florida and we hope commuters will get onboard and experience all that we have to offer."

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2014 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car. Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money. According to the April APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,174 annually by downsizing to one car.

Additionally, public transportation is a cornerstone of local economies in urban, suburban, and rural communities. In fact, a public transportation helps to make a community economically prosperous and competitive. Every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns, powering community growth and revitalization.
