Egg Drop at YAA

Davie, Fla. – A local fire department will drop hundreds of eggs from a fire truck ladder during Young At Art Museum’s annual EGGstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest on Wednesday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Museum, located at 751 SW 121st Ave. in Davie. The Egg Drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
A longtime, signature museum event held each spring, all of the eggs to be dropped will be encased in individual, protective “shelters” created by museum visitors and students using a combination of engineering and arts skills.

“Our annual EGGstravaganza Egg Drop Contest has grown to be a community favorite among our students in YAA Spring Art Camp as well as our daily visitors,” said Mindy Shrago, executive director and CEO of Young At Art Museum. “It thrills us to see students using a vast range of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) strategies to build the perfect egg shelters. We also are very grateful to the men and women of the local fire department who helps make it all possible.”

A variety of “building materials” such as tape, paper bags, cotton balls, and more are available to the children to construct their protective shelters. A “challenge material” is always selected and must be used in the egg shelter design. Egg-building kits are $2 per kit.

At 2 p.m., children and families will gather at the Museum’s east-side circle to witness the eggs being dropped. In past years, the crowd has made original signs that read ‘SPLAT!’ and ‘EGG-cellent!’ while chanting “Drop the Eggs!” as they fall one-by-one from the ladder.

New this year, a live DJ will provide music and encouragement for the crowd as the eggs are dropped. Typically, about 200 eggs are dropped and less than a dozen survive. Prizes are awarded to the winners.
During the EGGstravaganza!, Young At Art Museum’s exhibition Magic & Mayhem: The Art of Iconic Toys also will be on display for visitors to enjoy. In conjunction with this exhibit – primarily featuring collections of Transformers® and My Little Pony® – there will be a Transform Me! ArtStation, green screen photo booth, life-sized toy box and more.

Sponsors for this year’s EGGstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest include BrightStar Credit Union, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, New York Life, and Florida Medical Center.

All activities are included with paid admission to Young At Art Museum: $14 per person; $12 for Broward County residents, seniors and children over age 1; and $11 for military members and their immediate families. Egg-building kits are $2 per kit. For more information, call 954-424-0085 or visit www.YoungAtArtMuseum.org.
