FORT LAUDERDALE – As the finale to its acclaimed inaugural season at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Slow Burn Theatre Company presents the hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal Heathers: The Musical in its South Florida premiere from Thursday, June 9 – Sunday, June 26.
The award-winning creative team of Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, Desperate Housewives), Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde) and Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness, She's the Man) created the musical based on the 1989 cult film with Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.
The New York Post applauded the new stage version calling it, “Ingenious, naughty and very funny. Heathers still cliques.” The show business magazine Variety noted, “In song after song, the scribes consistently come up with sharp lyrics, many of the lines lifted directly from the movie, for the characters’ deepest — or most superficial — thoughts.”
Abby Perkins stars as the brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique in high school. Before she can get comfortable on the top of the popularity food chain, her status is threated when she falls in love with the dangerously sexy new boy in school, played by Bruno Faria.
Slow Burn Theatre co-founder Patrick Fitzwater directs and choreographs this laugh-out-loud comedy that takes an unflinching look at the joys and anguish of high school.
Heathers: The Musical features a talented cast of local actors including Christina Flores, Justen Fox Hall, Sunny Gay, Leah Greene, James Giordano, Shelley Keelor, Noah Levine, Meagan Nagy, Sahid Pabon, Natalia Patino, Ben Sandomir, Domenic Servidio, Leah Sessa, Stephanie Trull and Corey Vega.
The creative team is musical director Manny Schvartzman, scenic designer Sean McClelland, lighting designer Becky Montero, costume designer Rick Pena and sound designer Richard Szczublewski.
This production contains adult content. Performances in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center are Thursday–Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m.
