Fort Lauderdale – The City of Fort Lauderdale will host the opening of South Middle River Park on Saturday, December 10 at 9 a.m.

The park is located at 1718 N.W. 6th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The program will include remarks from elected officials, city staff, and area residents. The opening ceremony will conclude with a sign unveiling and refreshments.

South Middle River Park is located in District II of Fort Lauderdale on approximately 1 acre. The City of Fort Lauderdale acquired the property in October 2007 with a grant from Broward County's Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond program. The concept of the bond program is consistent with the City's parkland acquisition and management goal "to preserve ecologically and historically important lands from development in areas of Fort Lauderdale characterized by intense urban development and almost complete loss of open space."

The City of Fort Lauderdale sought to develop the land as a neighborhood park for the South Middle River community, which was also instrumental in the design of the park. The park's amenities include a pavilion, a playground with artificial turf surfacing, fitness stations, park benches, picnic tables, bicycle racks and native landscaping.

The City also received two additional grants from Broward County's Land Stewardship program. With the assistance of these grants, many of the materials being used in the park are defined as green components, which includes products or technologies used in site development that reduce the environmental burden associated with traditional materials, fixtures or technologies.

Green components, made in whole or part with recycled materials, used in South Middle River Park include the pavilion, playground, playground surfacing, fitness stations, picnic tables, park benches, bicycle racks and trash receptacles. The park's additional green features include solar-powered trash/recycling receptacles, an irrigation system with rain sensors and native landscaping.
