Fort Lauderdale, FL – Thanks to PetSmart ® Charities ®, the Humane Society of Broward County was awarded a $56,000 grant to be used exclusively for the spaying/neutering of felines residing in the Hollywood zip code of 33020. Hollywood is the twelfth largest populated city in the state and also an area that has an enormous number of feral and free roaming cats. As a result there are thousands of kittens born each year and many of them end up in animal shelters.
Owned cats, feral cats and neighborhood cats residing in the intervention area are eligible. Included are the spay or neuter; free vaccinations, Revolution for fleas and intestinal parasites and ear notching for ferals. The ultimate goal is to reduce the population of unwanted cats and the number of cats surrendered to the shelter. The goal is to sterilized 2,240 felines. Appointments are necessary and proof of residency is required.
Surgeries will be performed at the Humane Society of Broward County and at DPC Veterinary Hospital in Hollywood. The shelter has a limited number of humane traps available for those who feed felines, but are unable to handle them. To make an appointment to have an eligible cat spayed or neutered, please call DPC at 954-989-9879 or email the Humane Society at spayneuter@hsbroward.com or 954-463-SPAY(7729).
Trap-Neuter-Release, commonly referred to as TNR is an effective way to control and manage feral and free-roaming cat populations. The Humane Society of Broward County works with many local TNR groups, providing services for them on a year round basis. In fiscal year 2012/2013 the HSBC provided a total of 12,322 spay/neuters for the community which includes these dedicated individuals and organizations who do TNR. It is generous grants such as this that will make the difference in the number of unwanted cats in Broward County.
The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization that is supported by people and companies who want to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals. The shelter is not affiliated with any local or national organization with a similar name and does not receive tax dollars to operate.
