Fort Lauderdale – The City of Fort Lauderdale will host the grand opening of Harbordale Park on Saturday, January 14 at 12:30 p.m. The park is located at 1817 S. Miami Road in Fort Lauderdale. The grand opening program will include remarks from elected officials, City staff, and area residents. The ceremony will conclude with a sign unveiling, photo opportunities and refreshments.
Harbordale Park is located in District IV of Fort Lauderdale on approximately one acre. The City of Fort Lauderdale acquired the property in 2006 with a grant from Broward County’s Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond program. The concept of the bond program is consistent with the City’s parkland acquisition and management goal "to preserve ecologically and historically important lands from development in areas of Fort Lauderdale characterized by intense urban development and almost complete loss of open space."
The City of Fort Lauderdale sought to develop the land as a neighborhood park for the Harbordale community, who was also instrumental in the design of the park. The park’s amenities include a pavilion, a playground with an artificial turf surface, fitness stations, park benches, picnic tables, a bicycle rack, native landscaping and lighting. Additional amenities include historical markers such as a gate monument from the original Harbordale Elementary School built in 1959, plaques depicting the significance of Miami Road and a dedication to Helen Ferris, founding member and leader of the Harbordale Civic Association.
The City also received three additional grants from Broward County's Land Stewardship program. With the assistance of these grants, many of the materials being used in the park are defined as green components, which include products or technologies used in site development that reduce the environmental burden associated with traditional materials, fixtures or technologies. The following green components used in Harbordale Park are made in whole or in part with recycled materials including the playground, playground surfacing, pavilion and park benches. The park’s additional green components include solar-powered trash/recycling receptacles, energy efficient lighting, an irrigation system with rain sensors and native landscaping.
