As communicated in a conference call this morning (May 15, 2012), the State Board of Education has decided to review the criteria for proficiency in writing based on the results from this year's FCAT writing assessment. This year, the essays were scored with a greater focus on English Language conventions and support. This increased the expectations in regards to the writing assessment. The impact on scores, resulting from the increase in these expectations, was larger than the State Board of Education expected.
District staff will continue to work with the State Board of Education for guidance and direction on how these changes will impact the District – our students, their parents and our staff.
At this juncture, the State Board of Education will adjust the scoring for the FCAT writing test (lowering the scoring from 4.0 to 3.0 to determine proficiency). Individual student scores in writing should be available by the end of this month.
