FORT LAUDERDALE - Twenty-two Broward County high schools and two middle schools were represented by 300 delegates at this year's convention of the Florida Association of Student Councils (FASC). Over 1,000 delegates representing nearly 100 schools statewide attended the event hosted by Astronaut High School in Titusville from March 2 – 4. The delegates heard from speakers, attended workshops, adopted resolutions to send to the state legislature, participated in contests and elected officers for the 2012/13 school year.
In the individual contests, Sara Sherman of Coral Glades High School was selected as the FASC member of the Year; Eddie Oliver, Jr. from Boyd Anderson High School won the FASC high school speech contest; Kailin Baer from Westglades Middle School won the middle level speech contest; Michael Ramirez, principal of Coral Glades High School, was named the FASC Principal of the Year; and Melissa Goldstein from Coral Springs High School was selected as the FASC Student Government Advisor of the Year.
Among the schools elected to offices for the 2012/13 school year were Pompano Beach High School, elected as FASC vice president, and Coral Springs High, elected as FASC secretary. Westglades Middle School won the first Gold Medal Council of Distinction Award ever given to a middle school and Bair Middle School won first place in the category of middle school community service projects.
Additionally, Coral Springs, South Plantation, Pompano Beach, West Broward, Flanagan, Taravella and Pembroke Pines Charter high schools were recognized for completing outstanding projects in specified categories including, Citizenship Development, School Service, School Spirit, Environmental Concerns and Health and Safety.
Sixteen Broward County high schools won awards in the Medallion Council Program at FASC, which recognizes the best high school student government programs in the state. Winners of the Gold Medallion included Pompano Beach, Coral Glades, Blanche Ely, Coral Springs, Cypress Bay, Everglades, McArthur, Plantation, South Plantation, Western, West Broward and Pembroke Pines Charter high schools. Silver Medallions were awarded to Flanagan and Cooper City high schools, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was awarded a Bronze Medallion.
