The Northeast High School InvenTeam is nearing completion of a collapsible emergency water filtration station prototype that could be used for disaster relief in tropical areas.  The devise would provide clean water for the affected population and aid workers, reducing the risk of water borne bacteria, such as cholera and E. coli.  It could be used by relief organizations such as the Red Cross and Food For the Poor, because it is collapsible and transportable.  Northeast was one of only 13 high schools selected nationwide to receive a grant up to $10,000 to invent a solution to a real-world problem.

Leigh Estabrooks, Invention Education Officer of the Lemelson-MIT Program, the group that awarded the grant, will visit Northeast on Wednesday, February 15, 6:30 p.m. to view a presentation of the team’s invention, offer feedback and also speak on the importance of the ecosystem for young inventors in South Florida. Northeast High School is located at 700 NE 56th Street in Oakland Park.
