FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- The Humane Society of Broward County's Planned Giving Committee recently held its annual Legacy Club Luncheon at the Coral Ridge Country Club to honor Shelter Legacy Club Members and their guests. This dedicated group of supporters believes in the HSBC's mission and the programs and services offered by the shelter, and its members have chosen to leave a lasting legacy to the animals in the future.

HSBC Chairman of the Board Gerry Weber shared with the guests many of the accomplishments the shelter staff and volunteers achieved this year including: the completion of the shelter renovation; spaying and neutering nearly 12,000 owned pets and free roaming cats – this includes 2,262 cats in a targeted area in Hollywood that were sterilized thanks to a grant from PetSmart Charities ®; educating more than 150,000 children in our community and placing over 8,200 dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, rabbits and Guinea pigs in fiscal year 2014.

Guests enjoyed a wonderful lunch, learned more about the shelter by playing an entertaining game of "Jeopawdy" hosted by committee member Charles Sparano of McGladrey. Attendees were thrilled to meet two dogs, Peaches and Jen who were surrendered because their owner had too many pets.
Chaired by Jennifer Robinson of The Northern Trust Bank Company, the HSBC Planned Giving Committee is a group of professionals willing and able to help you make a difference. "Planned Giving" refers to charitable gifts that are planned in advance to benefit the charity and the donor, using the principles of good financial planning. It can be leaving a legacy through your will, making the charity a beneficiary of your IRA, 401K or even through insurance. According to Jennifer "a gift of any size is always welcomed by a charity, and the HSBC has been the beneficiary of gifts ranging from $500 to over one million and some have even elected to leave the shelter property. The important thing is to plan ahead and recognize the charity by its proper name. Many people think that the Humane Society of Broward County is part of, or a branch of national organizations with a similar name...and that is simply not the case. The Humane Society of Broward County has one location on Griffin Road and does not receive funding from any other group with a similar name."

It is always wise to seek the guidance of a good attorney or financial planner; however, many simple gifting strategies do not require extensive meetings and fees.
